In a very large spreadsheet, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) records 17,967 cases of people dying or going missing along 3 of Europe’s major migration routes between January 1st, 2014 and April 6th, 2020.Routes is an installation documenting this tragedy. Collages show a satellite image of every location reported in the spreadsheet, with each individual represented, we are confronted with death at scale, a pixelated European landscape.Alongside the monumental collages are quieter photographs, individual moments of burial, mourning and remembrance. In these photos we see the traces these moments have left on our landscapes. The nameless recorded in graveyard registers, ground dug and re-dug, people given a permanent status in countries perhaps otherwise hostile, their visas carved from stone.
