A LINE IN THE WATER

(2022) Ongoing
A Line in the Water is a project documenting the life of a changing and unruly river. The Rio Grande. The Rio Grande, running from the snowpacks of the Colorado Mountains, flows for 3,034km, eventually spilling out into the Gulf of Mexico. For 2,000 of those kilometres, the river forms the international border between the United States of America, and the United States of Mexico.

The border, any border, is an assemblage of lines of sight, argues C.J. Alvarez in is book Border Land, Border Water: A History of Infrastructure Building along the US/Mexico Divide. This project, in building on that, shows that the border is not only an assemblage of lines of sight, but an assemblage of maintenance. From cutting cane to digging levees ro building dams, the many actions that go into building the border, often hitten in projects of flood defence and irrigation, as as much tools of border making, as border patrol enforcement, patrolling unsanctioned millitias and border fences.

The project tells the stories of border movement, maintenance and management, and sheds a light on just how contructed a ‘natural’ border is.

Slated for release in Winter of 2022. This project is generously supported by the Mead Fellowship Foundation.
